About the Item

Set of three tiles ceramic coat rack painted and glazed, with raised Harlequins, design by Otello ROSA for SAN POLO Venice. ORIGIN Italy PERIOD 1950s AUTHOR Othello ROSA Painter and sculptor Otello Rosa was born in Venice in 1920 where he attended the Carmini Art Institute and the Academy of Fine Arts. In 1949 he founded, with Alessandro Coppano and Emilo Stocco, the manufactory for the production of artistic ceramics 'R.O.S.' which a few months later, due to Stocco's retirement became 'CO.ROS.' In 1951 he ended the 'CO.ROS.' experience and became artistic director of the Venetian manufacture 'San Polo' a position he held until 1959. As part of the 'San Polo' Otello Rosa produced an important series of often large, unique pieces inspired by primitivism and informalism in addition to numerous plastic models depicting ironic harlequins as well as marine subjects and female figures. From the early 1960s he left ceramics and devoted himself to sculpture and painting. MARK SAN POLO Venice Manufacture for the production of artistic ceramics, active in Campo San Polo 2126 in Venice, starting in 1947, founded by Riccardo Mason who called in workers from a number of Tuscan manufactories to collaborate with him. The firm's production, which relies mainly on outside artists including the painter Giuseppe Santomaso, includes both modern ceramics, often inspired by the Italian commedia dell'arte tradition, and copies from antiquity. Stable collaborators include Otello Rosa, artistic director of the manufactory from 1951 to 1959, who during the years of his directorship called in Angelo Sciannella, Pino Cioffi, Elio De Pasco, Viviana Bisi, Nerone Fanton and Giovanni Pivetta, among others. The company is also famous for producing decorative fountains. In 1959, the manufacture was sold to Piero Zannini, who changed the company name to 'Ceramiche Veneziane' MATERIALS Glazed ceramic DIMENSIONS W 24 x H 21 x D 8 cm W 28 x H 23 x D 13 cm W 23 x H 21 x D 10 cm CONDITIONS The pieces are in excellent condition, as can be seen from the attached photos.
