About the Item
This stylish Mid-Century modernist magazine holder or rack has its design commonly attributed to Mathieu Matégot (1910-2001). This magazine holder is a striking example of the French 1950s metalwork design. The metal is folded, perforated, and lacquered-painted black and yellow. This piece still has the original "modele depose" label (patented model).
The magazine rack is in fine original condition with minor wear on the metal.
Measurements: 20.07 in wide (51 cm) x 7.32 in deep (18.5 cm) x 22.07 in high (56 cm).
Note: Mathieu Matégot (1910–2001) was a Hungarian-French designer and material artist. He was one of the most well-known French designers of the 1950s. Born and schooled in Budapest, he relocated to France in the early 1930s to work as a window dresser and women's apparel designer. He mastered metalworking methods while a prisoner of war in the 1940s. He began creating furniture after his release, pioneering many of the Midcentury design clichés we now recognize, such as metal-mounted rattan, steel tubing, and perforated sheet metal. By the 1970s, Matégot had returned to weaving tapestries.
