About the Item

Antique Velvet Pillows Hand made incorporating early textiles Early 18th Century Italian Genoa Silk and Metallic Velvet Fronts. Jardiniere Design Trimmed with 17th Century Silk velvet braid along bottom edges Antique gold metallic trims to 3 sides. Antique Dark Gold Mohair velvet backs. Antique gently time worn appeal that can only be achieved over centuries of use The velvet is approx 300 years old. and shows signs wear commensurate with immense age and use Please study photographs as they do form a very important part of the description SIZE 22 inches x 13 inches (56cm x 33cm) Velvets such as this were termed jardinière, or giardino, for the floral designs and the variety of colours. The five colours present here would have necessitated five supplementary warp threads in addition to that used to create the satin ground, these being passed over rods to make a looped pile. Some of these loops were subsequently cut to create the two heights of pile known as ciselé. Velvets of this type were much in demand for the upholstery of furniture. One example is in the collection of the V & A (accession number: 340A-1891) S5237 FOOTNOTE All my pillows are hand made by myself incorporating wherever possible rare early textiles I travel extensively throughout Europe to locate beautiful hard to find textiles , some of which can be up to 400 years old and of course will show evidence of this immense age Rarely totally symmetrical , with perfectly straight lines, without wear ,evenness in colour etc I work as best I can to retain all of this inherent quirkiness to obtain a gently time worn faded grandeur appeal that only be achieved over centuries of use Your pillow will be perfectly imperfect.
