Vintage Persian Baluch Salt Bag in green, red, Ivory, Brown as Tribal Wall Art
Located in Barrington, IL
Discover a truly exceptional piece of nomadic heritage with this Early 1900s Vintage Persian Baluch Tribal Salt Bag, now beautifully repurposed as unique tribal wall art. This extraordinary textile features a captivating geometric pattern rendered in a rich palette of green, classic red, creamy ivory, and warm brown. What sets this particular salt bag apart is its remarkable construction: it boasts a small Baluch piled rug woven for both the front and the back of the bag. This is a highly unusual and distinctive feature, as most traditional salt bags typically utilize a flat-woven kilim for their backing. This rare detail speaks volumes about the pride and artistry of the weaver, who meticulously created a functional piece that is also undeniably beautiful and luxurious. For tribal peoples throughout history, salt has been an indispensable and precious commodity, vital for preserving food and enhancing flavor. Its value was so profound that it often served as a form of money and payment. For desert caravans, salt was truly a life-saving spice. These specialized salt bags were originally woven as utilitarian items, designed to protect and transport this precious resource, along with other materials and goods, during the tribes' migrations between grazing lands and encampments. Due to their rarity, historical significance, and the stories they tell of a bygone way of life, these authentic tribal items have become highly collectible. Today, they are increasingly sought after as decorative arts, bringing a profound sense of history, authenticity, and design beauty to contemporary homes. This piece is an ideal acquisition for discerning collectors, interior design professionals, and anyone seeking to infuse their space with genuine tribal art and a touch of nomadic spirit.
