A remarkably rare specimen of Italian craftsmanship, this 18th century giltwood stool showcases exquisite elements of Louis XV design. By the Mid-Century, the powerful influence of French styles permeated the works of Italian cabinetmakers, who created a more robust and distinctly bolder vision of Louis XV. In true Italian fashion, the depth and richness of the carving is amazing, from the X-stretchers to the pierced shells on the facade. Combined with superb condition, this stool is an exemplary work of Italian design. A similar yet slightly later and smaller stool was owned by the 3rd Lord Berwick (1773-1842) and housed in his Attingham Park Estate in Shrewsbury, England, which was bequeathed to The National Trust in 1953. Provenance: Titled estate, Italy, circa 1750. Measures: 43" wide x 16" deep x 17" high.
