Antique French Hall Bench Breton Brittany Small Settee Carved Oak Lion Pew
About the Item
Antique French Hall Bench Breton Brittany Small Settee Carved Oak Lion Pew.
Direct from France, a wonderful antique French hall bench, with a charming combination of French style and versatile SMALL size. The back center features two different carved scenes of Breton men, in period dress, around a table. Note the carving details in the clothing and the room interiors, from the plates on the shelf to the hams hanging on the wall!!
The arms of the bench are carefully carved into lion bodies with each arm carved into a lion head that faces the center bench (we’ve never seen this, so we firmly believe this was a commissioned piece).
LARGE Black Forest dimensional carved florals and lion masks stand out on either side of the lower front panels that feature carved Breton lion mask center medallions amid carved French scrolls.
Further details include carved lower moulding and paw feet, with noteworthy carvings on both sides of the bench, which is always a sign of superior quality and craftsmanship. Indeed, the arm sides are carved as the backs and tails of the lion bodies!!!
Bench top lifts to provide generous interior storage. Quality throughout, well built by craftsmen of the period, circa1890.
Measurements: 43” ht. x 48” x 20”. 17.5” seat height. Interior storage approx. 13.5” ht. x 44” x 16”.
Brief note about Brittany Style Antique French Furniture:
The Celtic roots of the Brittany region of France are manifest in the furniture produced in this region. The Breton style is as distinctive as its special culture and easily recognizable due to its very ornate carvings. A hallmark feature of the Brittany Style of French Country Antique Furniture is the symbolic use of men and women in traditional Celtic dress to represent a strong work ethic, piety, and the enjoyment of life.

Brief note about Brittany Style Antique French Furniture
The Celtic roots of the Brittany region of France are manifest in the furniture produced in this region. The Breton style is as distinctive as its special culture and easily recognizable due to its very ornate carvings. Historically, the local economy in Brittany was heavily dependent on fishing and maritime activities, so one often finds circles and ship's wheels as a common decorative motif in the Brittany Style of antique furniture.
Often antique furniture in the Brittany Style was carved out of chestnut or oak, with a very dark finish. A hallmark feature of the Brittany Style of French Country Antique Furniture...
