Antique French Louis XVI Style Giltwood Caned Bench, C. 1885

Topped by a beautiful striated Flandres Rouge marble, this giltwood console from circa 1860 was hand-carved with Louis XVI style motifs. The one inch thick red, pink, beige, brown, and gray marble has a chamfered edge. It has been carved with two rectangular protrusions that align with the fluted legs below. The legs are adorned on the lower half by a leaf stalk with a curled tip above lanceolate cup feet, separated by a rectangular joint with a floret. This Louis XVI period giltwood firescreen is a rather unique find. Typically firescreens from this period (the late 1700’s) were produced with a tapestry or needlepoint body; this particular piece has a solid colored (gold) silk upholstery screen which meshes well with the giltwood frame. Firescreens were used during warmer months to cover the opening of the fireplace. The detachable crest (which can be removed to replace or reupholster the screen) has bell shaped finials on the shoulders that are connected by a raised carving.
