Hampton & Son's was opened in 1830 by William Hampton as a shop for the sale of general household furniture, located on Cranbourn Street. Their sofas and chairs became popular during the Edwardian era amongst the upper class. They made the furniture for the Park Lounge in the Dorchester Hotel in London and the Royal Yacht Britannia. International customers also included the Nizam of Hyderabad and the Maharajah of Kashmir. Hampton & Sons had the Royal Warrant of Appointment to Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother.
This is, simply put the finest example of this type of bench you will ever see. Hand carved from solid slabs of English Walnut and Oak, it is extra large (it dismantles into two easy to transport and install pieces) the arms depict Hounds heads with the side and central back panels being ornately carved with grape vine detailing, the central back panels have Jacobean style Linen fold carvings, the base fronts have what look to be Shakespearian heads surrounded flowing floral details, the sides have similar details again to the base but with Armorial shields
The piece retains its original key which is temperamental, it operates the back two cupboards which open to reveal coat and umbrella storage, the umbrella section has the original zink lined drip tray. The base seats lift up to offer large amounts of shoe storage. The bottom right seat has the original stamp Hampton & Son's with the order number 4552
This piece just screams English country house decadence, this is the conversation piece of all hallway conversation pieces! As mentioned above, being so large, it has been designed to slip in to two pieces, the back cupboard is one and the base another, the arms remove which provide most of the stability when joining them back together
In terms of condition the timber has been lightly cleaned hand condition waxed and hand polished, it has a wonderful period patina to it

A History of Howard and Sons
The name of Howard and Sons is probably one of the best known and highly sought-after names in Upholstered furniture. Over the next few paragraphs, I will do my best to give you a brief history of the company.
The company was started by John Howard in 1820 trading from 24 Leman St, London as a Cabinet Maker. Over the next 25 years they would make several changes of premises within the Whitechapel area. First to 27 Great Alie St (Now just Alie St) before moving a short distance to 34 Great Alie St.
In 1844 the company made its first venture into upholstered furniture by opening a showroom/workshop at 36 Red lion St. This was also to be a big move towards what would be their next and most famous location. In 1848 they moved to a new address much more accustomed with the name; Berners St. London as “Cabinet Maker, Upholsterer and Decorator” under the name John Howard and Sons.
The business seemed to boom at this location with workshops opening up at Tottenham St, Charlotte Mews and Fitzroy Sq and an expansion to a second Berners St building in 1853. In 1869 the company consolidated its many workshops into the one building on Cleveland St.
By 1872 the company was occupying 25, 26 and 27 Berners St. These adresses would remain unchanged until 1935. During this period they became a limited company in 1899 and won the first of their Royal warrants in 1901. In 1935 the the well-established decorators Lenygon and Morant...
