About the Item

A late 18th century French Directoire period hall bench handcrafted of walnut in the Provençal countryside near the picturesque hilltop village of Gordes, known for its white limestone architecture, lavender fields, and rich artisanal history. This stunning three-seat bench, known as a radassier, embodies the rustic elegance and refined simplicity for which the Directoire style is known. Born out of the revolutionary spirit of late 18th century France, Directoire furniture balanced neoclassical restraint with artisanal craftsmanship, especially in provincial towns like Gordes, where local craftsmen combined rural practicality with the decorative tastes of the era, producing pieces that were both functional and refined. This bench is a wonderful example of that tradition, an heirloom quality piece rooted in the rhythm of daily Provençal life. Having a slightly curved backrest with turned vertical slats and a carved back splat with four carved, stylized urn motifs that are typical Directoire symbols of neoclassical influence — clean, symmetrical, and subtly ornamental. The gracefully undulating arms flow gently into the frame and the long rustic rush seat is adorned with three loose cushions upholstered in vintage faded pink on cream toile de Jouy fabric featuring scenes from exotic hunting expeditions. Bringing a romantic and storytelling quality to the piece, the removable tie back cushions add character and comfort. Raised on ten turned legs joined by stretchers. With its historical Provençal character, gently sculptural form, and warm, beautifully worn patina that speaks to generations of use and care, this simple yet refined bench captures the quaintness and charm of provincial France. It would be equally stunning in a foyer, hallway, kitchen, or placed under a window or at the foot of a bed. It’s a true conversation piece, offering timeless French elegance, enduring comfort, and a touch of history from the heart of Provence.
