A striking late 19th-century Chinese bench, intricately carved from hardwood, adorned with elaborate dragon motifs. The craftsmanship displays exceptional attention to detail, with two bold, fierce dragon heads carved into the armrests, symbolising strength and protection. The backrest features a meticulously carved central dragon in high relief, framed by swirling clouds and foliage, evoking a sense of power and harmony. Supported by four cabriole legs, each leg showcases ornate carvings of traditional Chinese motifs, adding to the bench’s grandeur. Such benches, with their rich symbolism and expert craftsmanship, were often used in elite households, symbolising authority and prosperity. A waisted (refers to specific Chinese furniture construction & joinery) raised top set on frame with hump back stretchers and struts.
