About the Item

This pair of mid-19th Century French Louis XVI giltwood bergère armchairs are versatile, classic, and comfortable. During the second half of the 18th century, French furniture underwent a neoclassical revision away from the twirled, freehand designs of Rococo and instead included classical Greek motifs such as the straight-turned chair legs resembling columns, the undulating ribbon, and flower carvings throughout the frame. The slightly winged-out shaped back is like the winged-back armchairs, or fireside chairs, created to help shield a person from drafts of chilly air and to trap the heat from a fireplace. The fireside chair design, along with the other elements of these chairs make them comfortable and cozy whether pulled up next to a fireplace or not. The inimitable wear on the original gilt gives them a venerable vibe. To emphasize and exaggerate the silhouettes of these elegant gilt bergères while giving them a modern and fresh update, the chairs were upholstered with a cotton and viscose patterned fabric of pink and red lotus flowers floating in a water garden amidst a clear blue sky. The vibrant red seat is pulled together with a plush green welt trim. The marriage of the Asian art motif and the French features of the frame resulted in a transformation of the chairs into modern-day chinoiserie. These fascinating chairs are sure to add a touch of timeless exoticism to any room. Overall for Each H= 45 in. W= 31 in. D= 31 in. 45 lbs. Additional measurements: Seat H (floor to seat)= 22 in. 18th Century English George III Period Mahogany Armchair with Modern Fabric
Located in Chicago, IL
This is a finely carved 1760 English George III armchair. The George III period was named after the English monarch of the time. It was popular among the elite and mercantile class of people, due to its excellent material and intricate carvings. Due to the multiple King Georges, each George developed its own look. The George III period is also referred to as the Chippendale style. This period was often characterized by drawing on both the Rococo and Gothic styles. Pieces sported curves, arches, Chinese influences, and cabriole legs. This chair has been entirely carved out of mahogany; a premiere wood choice known for its durability, longevity, and rich coloring. The back has an elegant splat, a principal element of eighteenth-century English chairs. Splats are the center support for a chair’s open back and originated from the importation of Chinese Ming Dynasty chairs...
