About the Item

Dining chair, chestnut, rush, France, 1940s This design serves as an example of how traditional materials were refined through subtle, modernist influences in the 1940s. Crafted from chestnut and rush, the chairs obtain a natural and understated character, where the natural grain and warm tones seamlessly blend together. The backrest is composed of evenly spaced vertical slats and framed by two slightly curved uprights that extend from the base of the seat to the uppermost part of the backrest, where they culminate in a subtly arched top rail. The legs, a defining characteristic of this piece, display a distinct curvature; the front legs bow gently outward before tapering downwards to fine points, while the rear legs extend slightly backward. The slightly concave seat is made of handwoven rush, a natural fiber material that provides both strength and flexibility. The rush is meticulously woven in a symmetrical pattern, consisting of tightly wound, parallel strands running from the front to the back of the seat, creating a ribbed texture. This linear arrangement is framed by vertical rush weaving, which secures the structure while forming a visually distinct border around the central section. These French dining chairs exemplify a high level of artisanal skill, combining traditional woodworking techniques with meticulous handwoven detailing. Kindly note that this item is in good, used condition with signs of age and use. For further details, we encourage you to reach out to our team of design specialists.
