About the Item

These chairs were commissioned for a representative of a colonial settlement In Indie or in Ceylon (so not in the Dutch East Indies although one should not rule out this possibility!) We are still looking for the family crest identify. The client was definitely someone with a lot of money or someone who had an important position in this colony (Dutch or English). The style of the chairs can be traced to the mid-19th century (rococo revival with the curved legs). They are made of solid ebony and ivory (the tusks). 3 chairs have only a cross in the back and one has the full family crest. These chairs are in good condition. The connection of 1 chair is slightly loose. They were once covered over the wicker. One tooth of an elephant is broken and one is missing.
