Brutalism is an architectural style from the modern movement, which enjoyed great popularity from the 1950s to the 1970s before gradually declining, although various architects are still inspired by the principles of this current. It is distinguished in particular by the repetition of certain elements such as the windows, and by the absence of ornaments and the raw character of the concrete. The first examples of Brutalist architecture were inspired by the work of the Franco-Swiss architect Le Corbusier, notably the Villa Savoye (1931) and the Cité radieuse (1952). Parallel to the artistic movement of pop art, brutalism is expressed in particular through the construction of institutional buildings and universities in the United Kingdom, France, Eastern Europe and the United States. Generally of imposing dimensions, these buildings highlight their verticality and the roughness of the concrete, constituting a reaction to previous architectural currents (the Beaux-Arts style in particular), marked by more frivolity.
