Authentic Early Modernist Chair Robert Mallet Stevens, France, 1930s

About the Item

Robert Mallet-Stevens (1886-1945) came from an art-loving family and was one of the most influential French avant-garde architects and designers. He met very early on René Herbst and Pierre Chareau, later heroes of modernist design. In 1924 he organized the first exhibition of the Dutch artist group around Piet Mondrian "De Stijl" in Paris. He founded the "Union des Artistes Modernes" UAM in 1929, created a number of modernist houses (including 1927 on Rue Mallet-Stevens in Paris) and exhibition pavilions, (including for the World Exhibition in Paris in 1937), designed film sets as early as 1924 and grouped a large network of modern artists around him until his death. In his will he stipulated that his archive should be destroyed after his death, meaning that he was forgotten for a long time despite his enormous influence on modernity. The drawing shown from the Center Pompidou is therefore a rarity. It corresponds to the chair Mod.No.9 offered here with a laminated wood seat and painted tubular steel: This is a very rare and early example from the 1930s in original condition! - not to be confused with the Mod.No.222, which is still produced today. This is a museum piece.

Robert Mallet-Stevens (1886–1945) was a French modernist architect and designer. He believed in simple, functional designs which should be capable of mass production, and these principles are well evoked in his iconic Model 222 tubular chairs. The design was initially created for Mallet-Steven’s kitchen at the Villa Cavrois in the early 1930s but have been in production for decades after their conception.
