About the Item

We are presenting 2 rare pieces on sale one by one on 1stDibs : the earliest and rarely seen version of the iconic Tubor chair created by French Architect Robert Mallet-Stevens, certainly at the end of 1920’. The version we have appears in the archive advertising documentation of mineral water VALS-REINE, in a spa complex in Vals-les-Bains in France, dated 1935. Both pieces are museum pieces, coming in entirely original vintage condition.  A simple but complex chrome-plated tubular steel structure, in the spirit of Bahaus, integrating several asymmetrical and esthetic details, are giving this chair a strong unique look.  The backrest area is formed by 3 graphic metal strips joined and bended around the main structure, made in chrome-plated tubular steel. This metal architecture is punctuated by a bordeaux red leatherette seating area (fixed on a wood plate), and 4 thin bordeaux red bakelite legs, expressing together the radical constructivist spirit of the architect. The chair, rediscovered in the 1970 by Andree Putmann in its simpler version made for Villa Cavrois in Lille, has been simplified, copied, re-issued, etc... But almost never appeared in its earlier, architectural, original version as presented here and seen on the archive pictures joined. Compared to the previous piece, this one here comes in "good" condition : rusted chrome metal all over the chair, a few scratches on the original used leatherette, cracks in the 4 bakelite legs. Born in 1886, the architect Robert Mallet-Stevens is one of the main actors of French modernism, inspired by the Wiener Werkstatte, close to the movements such as De Stijl and Bahaus. Amongst other, he designed Villa Noailles in Hyères, Villa Carvois in Lille and Hôtel Martel in Paris. It’s only at the end of the 1980’ that his work started to get recognition for its purest, optimal 1930’ style, joining esthetic research and functionality. The Pompidou Center in Paris gave a retrospective of his works in 2005, which helped to renovate several buildings he designed. Almost all the archives of the architect were destroyed at his demand, except those given by his wife to the Musée des arts décoratifs in Paris in 1961.
