Bent Oak & Pink Cord Chairs, Dřevopodnik Holešov, Czechia, 1970s

About the Item

A pair of bentwood chairs in dark oak, uphoulstered in a pink corderoy fabric, manufactured by Dřevopodnik Holešov in the 1970s, a furniture company based in former Czechoslovakia that continues to operate to this day. The shapes created by the bentwood frames are highly surprising. This is a result of the front and back legs intermingling on their way to both becoming the backrest support. Although unusual, striking shapes are typical of Mid-Century Czech design. The roster of Dřevopodnik Holešov boasts many designers, including the renowned trio of Zbyněk Hřivnáč, Jan Bočan and Jan Šrámek. Together, these three designers have made significant contributions to the visual culture of the Czech Republic, leaving a lasting legacy of unique creativity and craftspersonship. Their collaborations with Dřevopodnik Holešov did much to elevate the company's reputation and helped position Czech design on the international stage.

Black Leather Hammock Chair, Mogens Voltelen, circa 1930
By Mogens Voltelen
Located in London, GB
The interplay of straight and curved lines within the chair’s design is very visually satisfying. The rhythm of lines is evident not only in the mahogany wood frame but within the leather too. The seat and back having a hammock construction mean the leather is allowed to bow naturally. The continuous curve that the back legs are carved into and the apron (wooden rail across the front) at the front of the chair both echo the exact arc of the leather hammock...
