Digital Chaiselongue by Philipp Aduatz

About the Item

Digital Chaiselongue by Philipp Aduatz 2018 Edition of 8 + 4 A/P Dimensions: 90 × 50 × 50cm Materials: Concrete 3D printed, Carbon fibre reinforced The Digital Chaiselongue emerged from a collaboration of Viennese product designer Philipp Aduatz with Austrian start-up company incremental3d from Innsbruck. The sculptural design language is realized by the use of an innovative digital fabrication technology that allows to 3D print very detailed concrete geometries in a very fast time. The concept is to use the new technology developed by incremental3d for a complex freeform design by Philipp Aduatz and show the new possibilities of creating complex shapes in an application for furniture design. It is further the aim to show the synergy of the experimental and scientific approach on design by Philipp Aduatz with a company that has developed a new technology and looking for applications. For the Digital Chaiselongue a three-dimensional base plate was first 3D printed from concrete. Afterwards the complete geometry was printed in less than one hour onto the plate. To provide sufficient tensile strength, carbon fibres are inserted in sensitive areas. The seating area was finished using a UV-resistant polyurethane coating in delicate handcraft, this should demonstrate that craft and digital technologies can coexist for the purpose of innovation in the 21st century in harmony. Incremental3d is a startup company from Austria founded in September 2017 by Georg Grasser, Johannes Ladinig and Lukas Härtenberger. They have been doing research in the field of concrete printing the last years together at the University of Innsbruck in Austria and have developed a new and innovative technology for concrete 3d printing: unlike other concrete printers, this technology allows to print very fine and detailed freeform geometries very fast with a high resolution closely to the already established Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) 3D printing technology using polymers. No moulds or support structures are necessary, the freedom of form has a new meaning with this process by using a six-axis robot. Vienna based Designer Philipp Aduatz (born 1982) creates limited edition functional objects that are highly sculptural in nature. Working with innovative materials and fabrication technologies, Aduatz is very much influenced by scientific matters such as chemistry, physics and material technologies. His process combines traditional craft concepts and techniques with cutting edge implements such as 3D printing, 3D laser scanning, CNC milling, and Rapid Prototyping. The experimentation with different materials and their behavior is an important part of his research at the intersection of design and sculpture. Greatly influenced by sculptors such as Constantin Brancusi and Tony Cragg, the designer aims to develop a distinct language of form in each of his pieces, encouraging a new discourse between the object and its user or viewer.

Melting Chair by Philipp Aduatz

Melting chair by Philipp Aduatz 2011 Edition of 12 + 3 A/P Dimensions: 95 x 93 x 78 cm Materials: Glass fibre reinforced polymer with a special silver coating New since 2012: special black chrome edition of 12 + 3 A/P Philipp Aduatz´ intention in the design of the Melting Chair is to capture a transient transformation within a sculptural object. The Melting Chair, which is suitable for use, is carefully crafted to appear to the viewer either as a solid chair melting away or as a solidification of a liquid melt. Usually, materials can be observed in certain aggregate phases: they can be solid, fluid or gaseous, but not at the same time. Only during phase transitions the borders between these phases become blurred. This moment of change seems utterly fragile and filled with fascinating possibilities at the same time. Aduatz main goal in the design of the Melting Chair was to hold on to this fleeting moment and phrase his fascination for it into a usable object. To create a realistic illusion, Aduatz studied the solidification of fluids as well as the melting of solids with modern 3D animation software. With this background, he designed the surface of the object down to the smallest detail - like an architect plans...
