Early 19th Century English Painted Mahogany Children’s Armchair, England 1830’s

About the Item

A rare and beautifully sculpted English children’s armchair from the early 19th century, Regency period, circa 1820–1830. Crafted in solid mahogany and retaining its original black painted surface, this piece exemplifies the refined yet bold aesthetic of English Regency design. The chair is distinguished by its elegantly shaped cabriole legs ending in hoof-like feet, characteristic of early 19th-century English craftsmanship. The deeply scrolled arms and shaped double-splat backrest further reflect the Regency period’s fascination with classical and neoclassical motifs, scaled down here to children’s furniture — a rare and sought-after category. The painted surface is original, with a richly worn patina revealing the mahogany underneath in areas of natural wear, adding exceptional character and depth. The chair retains its original stuffed seat, now covered in an antique textile, likely velvet, adding to its untouched authenticity. Structurally sound and with no later restorations, this is a rare survival and an important example of early children’s furniture
