Ghanaian wood, iron, and cowhide chair, early 20th century

About the Item

A stunning Ghanaian throne chair, early 20th century. Wood (potentially mahogany) with iron studs and original cowhide seat. Curiously, part of the metal on the backrest reads «made in Germany» , but the style of the chair and the metal forged symbol on the back are clearly Ghanaian; the chair was purchased directly from a Ghanaian collector whose ancestors had imported the piece from Accra. There is some wear, so please inspect the photos. Pick up in central West Los Angeles or we ship worldwide; please don’t hesitate to reach out for alternative (ie cheaper) shipping quotes. POLYCHROMED WROUGHT-IRON AND SADDLE-LEATHER SAVONAROLA CHAIR With cerule form, probably early 20th century Item # 311ESB30P ** Sold individually, but we may have up to 4 of these chairs available ** A very compelling form, this classical "Savonarola" chair is crafted entirely by hand using forged iron that shows every trace of the blacksmith's work throughout the surface. They are in a cerule form with hammered spade feet, the legs joined with a central pivot point at the center of each cyma-curvature, this joint decorated with a wonderful iron rosette on both the front and back. The seat and seat-back are slung with leather that is affixed with rawhide lacing, the seat-back decorated with two beautifully formed finials with ruby-red and part gilt highlights to the surface. These are being sold individually, but we acquired these as a set of four and may still have several available. The images are of only one of the four chairs, but they are all identical in overall condition and form. Measurements: 33 1/2" H x 18 3/8" D x 26" W; 19 1/4" H to seat Condition Report: Distressed wrought-iron with loss to polychroming and part gilding throughout; incredibly strong and stable; leather is modern and in good condition with only minor wear.
