Janine Abraham Set of 4 Chairs for Maison Rougier, France, 1950s

About the Item

Rare Set of Four Chairs by Janine Abraham for Maison Rougier, France, late 1950s. This model was presented at the 1956 Salon des Artistes Décorateurs. Each chair features a black lacquered metal base supporting a seat and backrest in rattan, wrapped in beige plastic. The set is in original condition, with wear consistent with age and use. A metal plaque “Rougier” is affixed to the back of each chair (see picture). Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts and the École Camondo, Janine Abraham refined her skills working with notable designers such as René-Jean Caillette and Meubles TV. Starting in 1954, she designed an entire line of furniture for Maison Rougier - then still an artisanal company specializing in rattan, including these chairs and the matching table (also available for sale). She later joined the agency of Jacques Dumond, where she met Dirk Jan Rol, who would become her creative and life partner. The matching table pictured is also available for sale.
