About the Item

An original vintage Teak Scandia Senior chair, designed in 1957 by acclaimed Norwegian designer Hans Brattrud for Hove Møbler. These iconic chairs feature gently curved backs formed from laminated wood slats, offering a sleek, sculptural profile. Raised on elegant chromed wire bases with minimalist hairpin legs, the chairs embody the clean, functional aesthetic of mid-century Scandinavian design. Their lightweight structure also allows them to be conveniently stackable. Comfort meets craftsmanship in these chairs, their contoured, organic shape is designed to follow the form of the body, providing excellent support and visual appeal. The Scandia series is celebrated internationally, having received: The Gold Medal at the International Arts and Crafts Fair, Munich (1967) The Award for Design Excellence by the Norwegian Design Council (1967) The Interior Innovation Award at IMM Cologne (2006) About the Designer: Hans Brattrud studied at the National College of Art and Design in Oslo where he first invented the Scandia chair for a class project in 1957. After early success, in the mid-1960s he shifted his focus from designing furniture to making prefabricated houses.

An early and scarce example, in orange polyester reinforced with fibreglass from the first series, which comprised only 35 and 50 items in various colours (red, green, orange, yellow), all of which were produced in Beltzig’s own workshop in Wuppertal. In 1968 the chair was exhibited at the Cologne Furniture Fair, where Verner Panton presented his Visiona 0 concept for a new lifestyle. In these years, Beltzig primarily devoted himself to the design of revolutionary plastic furniture composed of flowing, plant-like forms composed of moulded casts. Originally conceived as an outdoor child’s chair, the Surrealist form of the “Floris” chair...
