About the Item

The Scissors Chair, designed by José Zanine Caldas in 1950, is an iconic expression of Brazilian modernism, here presented as a pair. Created for living spaces and mainly dining rooms, this model was largely produced between 1948 and 1949. With a solid Pau Marfim frame and visible bolts, the design also came in variants with and without armrests. The upholstery of the curved backrest and seat contributes to both comfort and aesthetics, reflecting a period when fabric was widely used in furniture production. In this example, the structure is crafted from pequi wood, its X-shaped frame forming the scissor-like silhouette that gives the chair its name. The generous padding is upholstered in Pierre Frey’s Teddy Mohair Cyclone, whose rich texture contrasts with the warmth of the wood. Functional yet sculptural, the Scissors Chair distills modernist ideals of clarity and form while remaining rooted in Brazilian material culture, a testament to Caldas’s ability to transform utility into timeless elegance.
