About the Item

‘Ornamentum 1’ chair made from 6mm lasered aluminium. Designed as part of a collaborative project between spatial designer Orson Van Beek and fashion designer Quinten Mestdagh, consisting of three unique functional art pieces. Orson Van Beek and Quinten Mestdagh aimed to create a new kind of ornamental furniture that touches the boundaries between aesthetics and functionality. The typical historical aesthetics connected to Baroque and Rococo styles are translated into graphic symbols and icons that form the structure of the pieces. With this idea, they created a still life of three objects representing a chair, a table, and a lamp. Orson Van Beek and Quinten Mestdagh desired for the pieces to be excessively decorated, to a point that the actual piece of furniture becomes functionless and that it becomes almost an ornament in itself. The still life of the three pieces is a study and a reflection on how ornamental furniture has evolved, how it can be reinvented, and how it can find a place again in contemporary furniture design. Exhibited in the group exhibition 'LIMBO' at Everyday Gallery, Antwerp.

Blown-Up Chair by Schimmel & Schweikle, Netherlands, 2022
By Janne Schimmel
Located in Antwerp, BE
Blown-up chair by Schimmel & Schweikle, crafted from recycled plastic durable hard PU coating with brown peel structure. Schimmel & Schweikle is an ongoing collaboration between Janne Schimmel and Moreno Schweikle. Their work revolves around the nexus of technology, art, and culture. In that realm, Schimmel & Schweikle focus on developing concepts that deal with the closing gap of the digital and physical realm. For their graduation project "Return to Default" in 2018, Moreno Schweikle and Janne Schimmel digitally manipulated the DNA of three standard office chairs, creating faintly familiar mutants. The ordinary desk chair became a three-seater sofa, and twelve office stools melted into a majestic lounge chair. This particular conference chair was blown up into an overstuffed version, showcasing the importance of recycling shapes in design. The off-size frame was 3D-printed, traditionally upholstered, and reintroduced into the office space. We currently have a selection of these armchairs in stock...
