Pair of Chiavari Mid-Century Modern Italian Velvet High Back Chairs, 1950s

About the Item

This pair of Chiavari chairs with the typical high back was designed by Gaetano Descalzi in the city of Chiavari in Italy, where they have since been produced in various models. The chairs have been polished with shellac, keeping the original patina and reupholstered in ivory velvet. Chiavari was created in 1807 by the Chiavari cabinetmaker Giuseppe Gaetano Descalzi, who, at the invitation of the Marquis Stefano Rivarola, reworked some models of French chairs referable to the Empire style, simplifying the decorative apparatus and reducing the sections of the structural elements. The chair was successful and soon many factories were born in Chiavari and in the neighboring municipalities: at the death of Gaetano Descalzi, in 1855, there were about 600 workers employed in the sector. Chiavarina was appreciated by Carlo Alberto of Savoy, by Napoleon III and by the sculptor Antonio Canova. "If you like it, make your offer and we will evaluate it, it couldn't be better than this!".
