About the Item

A Fine Pair of Regency Period Side Chairs Circa 1810 This elegant pair of early 19th-century English side chairs is crafted from richly patinated mahogany, displaying the refined curves and aesthetic detail characteristic of the Regency period. The exaggerated klismos-style backs are adorned with finely carved leaf decoration along the crest rails, fluted lower back splats, and inset with rare hand-painted classical panels—one depicting a horse’s head and the other a seated figure, possibly mythological in theme, on a faux-verde background. The rounded seats are supported by turned and tapered front legs, terminating in toupie feet, while the rear legs are elegantly sabred for structural and visual balance. These chairs exhibit high craftsmanship, likely from a London workshop, and may have been made for a refined drawing room or library setting. Provenance: From a private collection in the United Kingdom; acquired from Connaught Antiques. Dimensions: Height: 33 in. (84 cm) Width: 17.5 in. (44.5 cm) Depth: 19 in. (48.5 cm) Condition: Excellent antique condition. The surface has been professionally waxed and conserved. Minor signs of age consistent with use, including faint craquelure to the painted panels. Valuation: £6,000–£8,000 (pair) Notes: The incorporation of painted medallions and the sculptural treatment of the back splats suggest a neoclassical influence often associated with designers like Thomas Hope. An exceptional example of Regency decorative taste and craftsmanship.
