Pair of Low Chairs, French Restoration Period 1840

About the Item

This pair of low chairs dates back to around 1840 and comes from France. The chairs were made during the French Restoration (Restauration) period. There is an interesting explanation why low chairs were produced in the 19th century. The low-slung design of classic Victorian slipper chairs for example allowed the mother who would have been wearing a stiff corset to interact with small children without bending over. In todays interior the low chairs are preferably used in front of fireplaces or just as comfortable lounge chairs in a living room setting. The chairs have an elegant mahogany veneer with yew wood flower marquetry inlays. They come expertly refinished with a new upholstery and fabric. 19.68 in (50cm) x 19.68 in. (50 cm) x 35.82 in. (91 cm), Seat height: 16.54 in. (42 cm). We offer matching low armchair from the same provenance.
