Pair of Turned Wood Chairs by Riki Watanabe, Japan circa 1985

About the Item

Pair of turned oak chair, evoking a Japanese reinterpretation of the Windsor model, a symbol of Anglo-Saxon artisanal furniture. The backrest, with fine, slightly inclined spindles, is distinguished by a solid wood crossbar with softened edges and a dark inlay at its center, adding depth and refinement to the piece. The seat, sculpted directly from the mass of wood, delicately conforms to the shape of the body, offering optimal comfort. This piece perfectly embodies the values of the Mingei movement: formal sobriety, the enhancement of wood in its purest simplicity, and exceptional craftsmanship.
