Pair Portuguese Rococo Jacaranda Hand carved Wood Dining Side Chairs Antique LA . An important Pair of 18th century Portuguese Rococo Jacaranda Wood High end dining room chairs with beautiful carving all around. This set of seating is upholstered in light cream fabric that you might want to update to your taste. Each chair is raised by fine and uniquely shaped circular legs. At the frieze is a most decorative carved pattern simple lines which extends around the sides and the back. Each back with a stylized foliate crest rail above an elaborately carved splat, on a serpentine seat on cabriole legs terminating in carved pad feet. They could be used as a pair of side chairs in different parts of the house. Bedroom chairs, as vanity chairs, hallway chairs, in a dining room, corner chairs, side chair. The pieces often boast elaborately turned legs and energetic carving, pierced decorations and unpredictable combinations of the other styles. in 18th century colonial Latin America by way of Portugal, the influence of which lasted from the 1690’s through to the development of neoclassicism in the 1780s. Elements of the chairs’ design can be found in the work of Thomas Chippendale, as published in the three editions of his Gentleman and Cabinet Maker’s Director from 1754. Portugal and England shared a significant bond during the eighteenth century, brought about by Portugal’s decision in 1703 to fight along side the British in the War of Spanish Succession and its bitter relations with the other leading European nations. A vogue for furniture in the English style thus developed, seeded by the many pieces brought back to Portugal in 1693 by the widowed Catherine of Braganza, Queen Consort of Charles II of England and daughter of John IV of Portugal.
