Stunning hand carved teak arm chair with beautiful patina. The front legs and arm rests are beautifully fluted and hand carved. The rattan seat has been replaced with wood. We have a collection of four all one of a kind. The price and images reflect the one shown. Full dimensions; Front 23.5″ wide x back 17″ wide x 18″ deep x 17″ seat height x 17” back rest height x 10-14” arm rest height. Circa 1900. We only source the best. Rare.
This chair was hand made in the spirit of Wabi-Sabi, a Japanese philosophy that beauty can be found in imperfection and impermanence. It is a beauty of things modest and humble. A beauty of things unconventional. It is the opposite of vulgarity. The costs of achieving this kind of minimalism are seemingly inconsistent with its mission of aesthetic humility. This kind of luxury is for a select few: The Emperor of Japan had a Wabi garden. Wabi is for people who already have a lot.
