About the Item

A sculptural armchair and matching footstool from the late 19th century, artfully assembled from the curving forms of American cattle horns. At once delicate and dramatic, the chair has a captivating silhouette of sloping lines and sinuous curves, guided by the natural taper of the black-tipped steer horns. Recently refreshed with black-and-white wool upholstery. Furniture and objects fashioned from cow horn became popular in the United States in the latter half of the 1800s, with unusual designs that spurred the imagination and evoked the spirit of the pioneering west. Such horn furniture was typically crafted in states along historic cattle trails, such as Texas, Kansas and Illinois, where proximity to stockyards provided an abundance of material. Chair is fragile and recommended only as a sculptural object. Additional Dimensions: Foot Stool: 13"W x 13"D x 8.5"H Chair Seat: 17"H

Provincial Chinese Roundback Chair, c. 1850
Located in Chicago, IL
Prior to the 10th century, Chinese society eschewed raised seats in favor of mats. The rising popularity of chairs and other forms of elevated seating led craftsmen to adapt traditional cabinetry and architecture techniques to the human body. In the case of this Yuanyi, or round chair, the flowing crestrail is a direct descendant of the simple armrests that had traditionally supported individuals on mats in their homes. This homage to an ancestral form, combined with traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery techniques, created an elegant, functional chair that has endured for centuries and inspired many contemporary furniture designers...
