Set of Two Rare Mid Century Yellow Shell Chairs, H. Lachert, Europe, 1960s

About the Item

Vintage Mid-Century Modern “Muszelka” Chair by Hanna Lachert for ŁAD, Poland, 1956 This iconic “Muszelka” (Polish for “Shell”) chair, designed in 1956 by renowned Polish architect and designer Hanna Lachert, stands as a testament to the innovative spirit of mid-20th-century Eastern European design. Produced by the Spółdzielnia Artystów Plastyków ŁAD (ŁAD Artists’ Cooperative) in Warsaw, the chair exemplifies the shift towards lighter, more organic forms in post-war furniture design. Design & Materials: • Crafted from solid wood (likely ash), the chair features a gracefully curved, upholstered seat and backrest that seamlessly merge, creating a shell-like silhouette. • The distinctive central indentation in the seat not only adds visual interest but also enhances ergonomic comfort. • Tapered legs provide stability while contributing to the chair’s elegant profile. Dimensions: • Height: 75.5 cm (29.7 inches) • Width: 49 cm (19.3 inches) • Depth: 59 cm (23.2 inches) Historical Context: Hanna Lachert (1927–2021), a prominent figure in Polish design, was instrumental in introducing modernist aesthetics to Polish interiors. Her collaboration with the ŁAD cooperative led to the creation of several iconic pieces, with the “Muszelka” chair being among the most celebrated. The chair’s design reflects the era’s embrace of new materials and techniques, such as bent plywood and innovative upholstery methods, to achieve both form and function. Condition: The chair is in excellent vintage condition, having undergone professional restoration. The upholstery has been renewed with a fabric that closely matches the original in texture and color, while the wooden frame has been meticulously refinished to highlight its natural grain. Provenance: Authenticated piece from the 1950s production by Spółdzielnia Artystów Plastyków ŁAD, retaining original manufacturer’s markings beneath the seat. Additional Notes: This chair is not only a functional seating solution but also a collectible piece of design history. Its timeless form and cultural significance make it a valuable addition to any mid-century modern collection or interior. Here set of two chairs is available.
