Vintage Mid-Century Modern “Muszelka” Chair by Hanna Lachert for ŁAD, Poland, 1956 This iconic “Muszelka” (Polish for “Shell”) chair, designed in 1956 by renowned Polish architect and designer Hanna Lachert, stands as a testament to the innovative spirit of mid-20th-century Eastern European design. Produced by the Spółdzielnia Artystów Plastyków ŁAD (ŁAD Artists’ Cooperative) in Warsaw, the chair exemplifies the shift towards lighter, more organic forms in post-war furniture design. Design & Materials: • Crafted from solid wood (likely ash), the chair features a gracefully curved, upholstered seat and backrest that seamlessly merge, creating a shell-like silhouette. • The distinctive central indentation in the seat not only adds visual interest but also enhances ergonomic comfort. • Tapered legs provide stability while contributing to the chair’s elegant profile.
