Set of Six Italian Carved Wood Hollywood Regency Grotto Chairs, circa 1980
An exceptional set of six Italian carved wood Hollywood Regency grotto chairs, circa 1980, distinguished by their dramatic scallop shell backs and refined coastal glamour. Each chair features a deeply hand-carved shell backrest measuring 19 inches wide by 19.5 inches high, with crisp fluting and gracefully scalloped edges—a direct nod to 18th-century Venetian and Rococo revival grotto furniture, beloved for its theatrical elegance.
The chairs measure 37.5 inches high overall, with seats 18 inches high, 18 inches wide, and 16 inches deep (seat width tapers slightly between 17 and 18 inches). Cabriole front legs and gently splayed back legs enhance the sense of movement and balance, while the bleached wood finish lightens the overall palette and accentuates the carved detail, perfectly complementing the seashell-inspired form.
A quintessential Hollywood Regency statement, grotto chairs were favored by designers for their sculptural impact and whimsical sophistication—ideal for dining rooms, coastal villas, or as striking accent seating in an entry or sunroom.
