About the Item

Eliel Saarinen (1873-1950) was an important figure in the earliest awakenings of Scandinavian Art Nouveau architecture, and was responsible for such masterpieces as the highly regarded Finnish Pavilion at the 1900 World's Fair. In his country, Saarinen is best known as the Dean of Cranbrook during that school's golden age, when his students included Charles and Ray Eames, Harry Bertoia, Florence Knoll, and, of course, his son Eero Saarinen. In 1983, the Finnish company Adelta produced a limited edition of an elegant 1929 design by Eliel Saarinen, called the "Blue Chair". These were designed by Saarinen for his wife's studio at Cranbrook. In common with Eliel Saarinen's other work from his time in America, the exotic-looking "Blue Chair" bears a strong Art Deco influence. This pair of limited edition Art Deco style chairs reproduced in 1983 by ADELTA after original designs by Eliel Saarinen (1873-1950). Titled “Blue Chairs”, the chairs have box style silhouettes with tapering vertical stiles to three sides over a square upholsterered seats. The chairs rise on tapered square legs and have green and gold painted finishes. Marked to the underside and numbered 447. CONDITION: Very good original condition, with minor signs of wear.
