Walter, the manager of the business, started the fabrication of bentwood furniture, in the Viennese style developed by the Austrian Michel Thonet in the second half of the 19th century. Although the furniture of the Gerdau family can be found in many places in Brazil, the Gerdau designs have remained a bit of an unknown legacy.
