About the Item

Incredible pair of original vintage French rugged and handsome moustache back leather club chairs. Oozing with masculinity, character and an unbelievable seductive attitude, these chairs are the ones most everyone wants. In 1925, the Paris Exposition des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes was a defining moment in the history of furniture design and art; as well as the birthplace of what would later become the Art Deco style and period, which extended through the 1940’s. The pure lines, geometric forms and right angles were an inspiration for sleek, modern, furniture design and came to inspire many future generations of designers. One particularly popular chair was born around 1929; simply called the “fauteuil conformable” or “comfortable armchair”, it was a French armchair introduced to the market by way of the French and English gentlemen’s clubs that were trendy at the time. While at his club, a gentleman would sink into a finely upholstered, plush, leather chair and relax with his favorite drink and perhaps a fine Cuban cigar. Over time, people started referring to this beloved style simply as a “Club Chair”. The Club Chair was an essential part of 20th century luxury furniture, and its longevity, clean but, sinuous lines and refinement are still very much admired today. Its original round form was legendary but, it evolved with time into new forms such as the “moustache” back with lip like curves across the back or the “chapeau de gendarme” with its elegant arch-like curve. The special pair shown above have been completely overhauled, meaning the original leathers were removed and any thin or unstable places were strengthened. While apart, my expert upholsterer rebuilt the tired springs and added new horsehair stuffing to even out this legendary pair. Not to worry, these chairs sit like a favorite old pair of jeans or shoes, the ones your spouse constantly threatens to dispose of, but, wouldn't dare. These chairs will soon become your favorite, and you will want one in most every room of your home. Don't worry, we understand this acute phenomenon. A stellar and noble pair, these are not to be missed!!
