Rare English 19th Century Leather & Walnut Swivel Railway Pullman Club Chair

About the Item

A rare 19th century leather and walnut swivel Pullman carriage railway club chair. Circa 1870. With First Class resembling an elite private clubhouse, the Pullman carriages were sumptuous and decadent, as shown in the sketch of an early First Class Pullman carriage included in the photographs. The Midland Company, who first adopted the Pullman cars, constructed luxurious vehicles in which every elegance and comfort were placed within the reach of the English traveller. The rich dark brown leather upholstery was replaced in 1949, according to the pencil description underneath the chair, and finished with copper studs. The pencil marking states 'A. Weatherill - Doncaster Aug 1949 - Re-Covered', which presumably was the upholsterer and the station where the chair was used. The leather seating is very comfortable. It has been cleaned with a natural balsam. It is in very good condition showing some signs of use as expected. To note, a couple of indentation marks to the back, a scuff to the arm, along with various light nibbles. It feels like it has been upholstered with traditional inners. The show frame is made in solid walnut, with burr walnut veneers on the front frieze and downward arms, sitting on a cast iron and steel swivel base. A circular plinth base has been added, probably at the same time this was reupholstered, as it would have originally been bolted to the carriage floor. The walnut frame and base have been cleaned and waxed. There are marks and knocks to the front walnut edge of the chair, the base has scuff marks and knocks. Please refer to the photographs. The pedestal has been moved back to its central position from a more forward position it was in. The swivel is in very good working order. There is one screw out of the eight missing to the steel plate, holding the seat to the base, but the base is very secure and would cause no issues. We have two of these wonderful early chairs available. The chair is 71cm wide at the arms. The bases are 61cm in diameter. The seat height is 47cm. Delivery is INCLUDED in the 'Buy-It-Now' price for all areas in MAINLAND England & Wales only. Delivery is restricted to ground and first floor only, unless there is a lift the item can fit in.
