Sit Down / Do Nothing Swivel Chairs II
About the Item
One of the earliest forms of human craft, textile is a universal language, both essential and accessory. For the past eight years nomadic artist Erik Speer has been creating experimental fiber art collages that employ an array of techniques – macrame, crotchet, knitting, felting, weaving, etc. Thoughtfully detailed and expressive, his sculptural “tapestries” are naturally evocative and deeply rooted in his personal narrative.
His first works of collectible design, introduced in 2024, is a pair of one-of-a-kind chairs upholstered in his signature woven, knit, and crocheted assemblages, at the upcoming Design Miami LA opening May 16. For nearly a decade, Erik Speer has been crafting experimental fiber art collages using techniques such as macrame, crochet, knitting, felting, and weaving. His detailed and expressive sculptural “tapestries” are deeply rooted in his personal narrative. Originally from Roswell, New Mexico, Speer’s fascination with the ocean began in South Carolina, where a biology teacher sparked his interest through field trips and scuba diving experiences. Despite initially pursuing a career in medicine, he realized office life wasn’t for him and became a diving instructor, teaching in various countries.
Feeling restless in marine biology, Speer moved to New York City to study fashion design at Parsons. Unsatisfied with traditional fashion design, he explored macrame and fiber arts. Inspired by his ocean experiences, Speer uses his art to share the underwater world. His pieces, resembling coral reefs, feature woolen wall hangings interspersed with shapes reminiscent of barnacles and sea urchins. Speer emphasizes the use of natural materials, including recycled fibers and yarns. His construction methods include knotting, knitting, crocheting, braiding, and weaving, pushing the boundaries of his medium.

Tusk Lounge Chair II in Polished Aluminum, USA, 2022
By Alex Roskin
Located in New York, NY
Todd Merrill Studio has been the exclusive representative of Alex Roskin since 2017. Roskin’s works blend functional design with modernist sculptural references. A natural successor of innovative artists such as Richard Serra, Jean Arp, and Constantin Brancusi, Roskin’s cast bronze, stainless steel, and carved wood works reflects the artist’s modernist and primitive influences. Beginning with a series of quick sketches, Roskin captures the movement of a basic form. By sculpting in foam and wood, Roskin translates that movement into a structural model that is then 3D scanned so that it can then be cast in bronze, aluminum or steel, and finished with carved wood elements. All chairs are offered COM/COL. His works often feature a mammalian physicality with heaving sinuous forms and legs that extend from the body in a bowed fashion.
Rejecting outright anthropomorphic mimicry in favor of subtle, sculpted muscular forms, Roskin notes: “I try with each piece to create a stance and a presence, some with more contrapposto. I aim to give each piece a feeling it is inhaling or ready to make a move...

Nested Discs II, USA
By Jamie Harris
Located in New York, NY
Today in addition to his fine art glass sculptures, Jamie Harris is creating unique, hand-made sculptural lighting. His Nested Disc series plays on layered geometries to create sophisticated lighting structures built from tiered levels of blown glass roundel forms. Ranging in sizes up to 36 inches, each organically shaped roundel is meticulously sized, its color chosen to interact with the neighboring level. As you walk around the piece, light bounces and cascades down, blending each shade while also responding to the surrounding light environment. By altering the opacity, hue, employing metallic finishes, or creating opalescent and iridescent surfaces, the works can sit at either ends of the spectrum from minimal to extravagant. Available by commission, each work is unique and fully customizable, from layout, sizing, coloration and finish.
Harris has studied at some of the most prestigious glass schools in the country: The Pilchuck Glass School, the Rhode Island School of Design, the Penland School of Crafts, the Haystack School and the Corning Museum of Glass. He also studied with some of the most renowned glass artists in the world, including Dante Marioni, Josiah McElheny...
