Studio-Made Captain’s Chairs in American Black Walnut, Winged Foot-2020

About the Item

Four remaining examples of a set of 90 handmade solid walnut Windsor captain’s chairs executed for Winged Foot Golf Club ahead of the 2020 U.S Open. The rest of the set is currently in use in the Grille Room at Winged Foot—a storied location in the history of U.S golf. These chairs were made by hand in our Brooklyn studio, featuring a carved and scrolled crown (backrest), wedged through tenons, h-stretcher undercarriage, and scooped and beaded seat. Commodious proportions with excellent ergonomics and comfort, the original archetype of the captain’s chair was used for lighthouse attendants, designed for relaxed comfort for long periods of time, this shape is also sometimes referred to as a “smoker’s bow” so named due to its favored status in social clubs and reading rooms throughout the u.k and u.s. This shape has influenced modern design as well, with interpretations from the inimitable Nakashima (captain’s chairs), and countless others. The back of the crown features a custom engraved brass plaque with the club’s famous winged foot logo superimposed over crossed golf clubs.

Vintage Arne Hovmand-Olsen for Mogens Kold Teak Lounge Chair-Denmark, 1960s
By Arne Hovmand-Olsen, Mogens Kold Møbelfabrik
Located in Brooklyn, NY
A lovely and dynamically-proportioned lounge or easy chair attributed to Arne Hovmand-Olsen and manufactured by Mogens Kold Møbelfabrik (metal manufacturer's stamp to underside) in sculpted teak and original boucle wool upholstery. Deeply patinated teak lends visual contrast against the off-white upholstery. Completely original condition down the the seat straps and brass hardware. Sophisticated seat cushion and backrest mounting system consisting of custom brass spacers which create a suspended effect to the panels keeping the design very airy and light. Hovmand-Olsen’s designs span seating, tables, and secretaries, all of which are characteristically simple in form with clean lines, organic curves, and tapered legs. Like many of his Danish contemporaries, he favored the use of high-quality, beautifully grained woods like teak and rosewood. Notable designs include his Model 175 chair (1955)—which is often mistaken for N.O. Møller’s Model 77 chair...
