About the Item
Elegant pink mohair single armchair made in the 1930s in the Swedish grace style. It is the Swedish Art Deco movement. Nailed on the backrest with brass nails. The feet are made out of light colored hardwood. Dimensions to be confirmed.

Son patronyme officiel, Swedish Grace - « la grâce suédoise » -, ne lui a pas été octroyé par un spécialiste local de l'art décoratif, mais par le critique d'architecture britannique Philip Morton Shand, lequel cherchait un terme pour qualifier cette production spécifique apparue à la fin des années 1910. Sa durée donc : 1917-1930 peu ou prou, une période brève et néanmoins remarquable quant aux arts décoratifs du XXe siècle. La raison ? Une esthétique élégante et raffinée, mais délicieusement simple.
Ce style aux couleurs subtiles, qui mêle néoclassicisme, art déco et quelques réminiscences du XVIIIe siècle suédois, supplante alors Art Nouveau et Romantisme national en vigueur, et se décline en un mobilier et des objets aux lignes élémentaires rehaussées de détails exquis. Outre des influences d'Afrique du Nord ou d'Amérique du Sud, s'y déploient également quantité de motifs antiques : la Grèce, Rome, les Etrusques, la Perse, la Chine ancienne, sans oublier l'Egypte. Pas étonnant, l'époque des grandes découvertes archéologiques bat son plein.
Dès 1917, une exposition dans la fameuse galerie d'art stockholmoise Liljevalchs, sur l'île de Djurgården, dévoile les prémices de cette « grâce » décorative à travers le mobilier de Carl Malmsten, les céramiques de Wilhelm Kåge et les textiles de Märta Måås-Fjetterström. Mais le premier coup d'éclat aura lieu en 1925, lors de l'Exposition internationale des Arts décoratifs, à Paris. Le temple néogrec édifié par Carl Bergsten, qui fait office de Pavillon national et où s'exhibent les meubles de Gunnar Asplund, Carl Hörvik ou Uno Åhrén et les sculptures d'Ivar Johnsson, rafle une ribambelle de Prix.

Exceptional brass and copper wall ashtray. It can be use a plant stand. Made of massive brass with wall fixture. You need two screws to fix it. The copper ashtray is made in one piece. It was cleaned by its previous owner but if you let it leave it will patinated soon. 26cm from the wall, diameter of the ashtray is 21.4cm and the height 5.5 cm.
_____________________________________________________________ Hans-Agne Jakobsson naît à Hvadhem sur l’île de Gotland en Suède. Menuisier de formation, il poursuit à Göteborg des études d’architecture qui lui permettent d’intégrer le département de design industriel au sein de General Motors. Très vite, sa passion du bois le rattrape et il s’oriente alors vers des créations plus artisanales. Il devient ainsi le collaborateur de designers célèbres tels que Carl Malmsten ou le très radical Werner West. De ces années d’apprentissage naît une profonde passion pour la lumière, la subtilité et la magie de l’éclairage. Installé dès 1950 à Markaryd dans le sud de la Suède, il propose ses créations dans sa boutique du centre-ville. L’anecdote raconte qu’un soir de Noël, trouvant son espace trop sombre, il crée dans l’urgence une suspension en pin. Son succès est tel qu’il décide de fonder en 1951 sa propre entreprise Hans-Agne Jakobsson A/B. La région de Markaryd est une région bordée de lacs et de bois sombres. Jakobsson ne s’inspire pas directement de la nature mais de l’atmosphère si particulière qui se dégage de ces paysages, où la lumière semble être en conflit perpétuel avec la nuit. Influencé par le modernisme, il s’intéresse également très tôt aux nouveaux matériaux qui apparaissent dans les années 1950. Le laiton le passionne tout particulièrement. Il l’associe naturellement au verre pour créer des modèles dont les plus monumentaux orneront les bâtiments publics, les salles de concert ou les églises. Il n’oublie pas pour autant les intérieurs de ses contemporains et crée de nombreuses lampes, lampadaires ou appliques n’ayant pour frontières que les limites de son imagination. Viendront au milieu des années 1960 les modèles en laiton et fils de soie qui connaissent un immense succès et propulsent Jakobsson parmi les créateurs les plus influents de sa génération.
