In 1931 the Maharaja of Indore - Maharajadhiraj Raj Rajeshwar Sawai Shri Sir Yeshwant Rao II Holkar XIV Bahadur - who was a very well educated and open minded person ordered a modern palace by eckart muthesius. he was very interested in art deco and the modernist movement in europe. for the interieur muthesius use furniture, lamps and carpets by eileen gray, le corbusier, jacques-emile ruhlmann, louis sognot, charlotte perriand and ivan da silva bruhns. he also created the famous red lounge chair, that was only made in two pieces for the library.
