About the Item

An exceptionally rare and character-rich set of 6 Spanish monastery dining chairs, dating to the 18th century. Crafted by hand from solid wood and upholstered in original vegetable-tanned leather, these chairs are imbued with the spiritual simplicity and enduring craftsmanship typical of ecclesiastical furniture from rural Spain. Each chair features thick, hand-stitched leather seats and backs, affixed with forged iron tacks. The squared frames are constructed with traditional pegged mortise-and-tenon joinery and bear the marks of age—exposed wear, surface erosion, and a deeply burnished patina developed over centuries. Most notably, the front stretchers exhibit decades of footrest wear—an evocative and beautiful detail that speaks to their communal, contemplative use in a monastic setting. Two of the chairs have small tears in the leather seats that have been professionally repaired. These repairs are structurally sound and discreet but noted here for transparency; the set is priced accordingly. The chairs' naturally softened leather seats and gently curved backs provide supportive, relaxed, and incredibly comfrotable seating. Unrestored and deeply expressive, this set offers a rare opportunity to acquire original 18th century Spanish chairs that have survived as a complete group. Their honest construction, enduring materials, and visible history make them ideal for collectors, designers, and institutions seeking pieces with soul and story.
