Campanino set of 8 beechwood and rope dining chairs, Chiavari, Italy, 1960s

About the Item

Set of eight lightweight Chiavari chairs in beechwood with woven cord seat, Campanino model, Chiavari craftsmanship, 1960s The classic Chiavari lightweight chair, known as the Campanino, embraced modernity in the mid-20th century with refined lines. While preserving the traditional craftsmanship of Chiavari manufacturing, the Campanino chair shed some of its turned decorations, revealing a more essential form. A successful reinterpretation streamlined the backrest and legs, simplifying the design while maintaining its renowned elegance and exceptional lightness. These particular chairs, sturdy and solid, were originally designed for the intensive use typical of public spaces, furnishing the veranda of a restaurant on the Ligurian Riviera. A meticulous restoration has revived the warm tones of the wood and all the aesthetic details of this high-quality chair. The seat has been renewed with a decorative woven pattern in twisted cord of varying colors. In keeping with tradition, the chosen knotting technique has an antique charm and is entirely handcrafted. The interwoven colored cords create a striking texture, while the vibrant tones complement a chair naturally suited to conviviality and hospitality. Batwing Brass Chiavari Chair Gothic Green Velvet 1960s
By Chiavari
Located in Melbourne, AU
A splendid brass example of the Chiavari style first developed in the coastal town of Chiavari, south of Milan, Italy. This particular specimen is in excellent condition, with a lovely recent restoration of the upholstery, well cushioned, in a tasteful dark green velvet. The chair is in very sound condition and is of a higher quality than others we have handled - notably the shaping of the feet and the back are particularly fine. The original Chiavari chair is a delicate-boned creature in light-weight timber, designed to be both light and strong. It’s turned timber frame gave the opportunity for elaborate decoration which was popular in the mid to late 1800s. The brass version was created in the 1950s as a playful reference to the original, the brass emphasising the elaborate framework. It’s intended as a decorative chair for hallways, as a bedside chair, or can be used as a feature chair...
