About the Item

Five antique chairs with leather seats and backs. Beautiful set of chairs from the 19th century, of remarkable presence and robustness, with a dark solid wood frame and high back. Both the seats and the backs are covered in natural brown leather, with delicate bas-relief work and fixed with large gilt metal nails, a common feature of furniture from the period. The leather, of generous thickness, precisely contours the cut-out shape of the backrest, suggesting a Renaissance influence, typical of 19th century European furniture. The front legs are richly turned, joined by equally worked crosspieces, with the centrepiece in the shape of a hollowed-out floral medallion standing out. The chairs have slightly inclined backrests and are pieces that could once have belonged to noble or aristocratic dining rooms. They combine functionality and decorative value and are authentic examples of 19th century cabinetmaking.
