G M Ellwood for J S Henry. A rare set of eight Arts and Crafts oak dining chairs

About the Item

G M Ellwood for J S Henry. A rare set of eight Arts and Crafts oak dining chairs. Inlaid to the headrest with a single pewter heart inset into a copper background within a circular inlaid line detail. The sophisticated stretcher arrangement uniting the legs lifts the overall design of the chairs. On the armchairs, this design detail also continues down from the arms through the seat joining to the stretchers not only adding strength to the chairs but elevating the overall accomplished design of the chairs. I have only seen four other versions of the side chairs, and this is the first time in 35 years specializing I have come across the armchairs. See Sotheby's London 22 Feb 2000 Lot 23 where a single chair sold for £5,040
