About the Item
A very good high backed 17th Century oak 'back stool' - peg jointed and solid with original timbers throughout and with a beautifully warm and natural colour. The tall back with a C-scroll carved crest rail with chip carved ground centred by a stylised tulip.
The oak has clearly very selected with great care. The beautiful bright medullary rays cleverly highlight and enhance the outline of the well shaped splat.
The back legs extend to create the back uprights of the chair and these are attractively carved with ogee forms and channels, the tips stepping gently down to give elegance. The back rail over the seat is channel carved. The joiner and carver were clearly skilled and experienced craftsmen and made a chair that day in the 1670s which has lasted in superior condition and used by generation after generation for around 350 years.
A good example, heavy and robust without weakness or movement at the joints, completely usable and with only a few small knocks and losses and a very old historic inlet repair to a small section of the lower rail of the back, well blended, completely stable and not noticeable.
The turned legs and raised front stretcher - a pattern that is seen in English and Welsh seat furniture from c. 1670 as houses became 'cleaner' - thus avoiding the need for a low stretcher at floor level on which to place your feet to raise them above a dirty insect covered floor!
A really good and handsome 17th century chair

17th Century English Oak Strong Box c. 1640
Located in Heathfield, GB
A rare English oak strong box retaining original and elaborately forged iron lock plate and lock with escutcheon cover and with the original working key.
The case with original beautifully shaped corner brackets and original carrying handles – all the hardware fixed with the original rivets.
The interior with seven oak drawers with attractive original handles, three over two banks of two, each drawer with very fine boarded linings in wainscot oak with nailed up bottoms.
These chests were used by merchants who travelled and traded. The drawers may have contained precious gemstones such as diamonds, gold or jewellery, spices or coins. The fall descends to form a desk at which to write, weigh or count. This example no doubt travelled aboard ships of the day carrying cargo and travellers around the world – ships like the wooden hulled Mayflower which took the Pilgrim Fathers to America in 1620. The strong box has probably visited many lands and carried all manner of exotic and highly valuable items. If only it could talk!

17th Century Rectangular Oak Joint Stool
Located in Bedfordshire, GB
A Very Charming Mid 17th Century, Charles II Period, Oak Joint Stool Of Pegged Construction, Plus Untouched Colour & Patina Throughout, Having Rectangular Moulded Top Over Turned Upright Supports With Original Straight Stretchers.
Sometimes referred to as coffin stools (although this was much more of a 19th century trend for their usage as opposed to their original purpose in earlier times) the humble antique joint stool was by far the most common form of seating in 16th and 17th century England. Indeed they were made in relatively vast quantities and almost every house would have a selection of them on hand in a variety of difference sizes and heights so that they could be used as required.
