Set of ten dining chairs, mahogany, velvet, brass, Italy, circa 1940
An elegant set of dining chairs that captures the distinctive charm of Italian design from the late 1930s into the early 1940s. The backrest serves as the expressive focal point, where the design truly finds its voice. Four horizontal slats define the form, each pierced by a series of elongated ovals, linked like a stylized chain or a rhythm of interlocking loops. The legs of the chairs are understated yet carefully resolved, contributing to the overall sense of balance and proportion within the design. Executed in solid mahogany, they are meticulously carved featuring raised vertical ridges, contributing to its refined appearance. The rear legs extend upward to form the frame of the backrest in a single, continuous gesture. A thoughtful design shaped by a strong tradition of craftsmanship and artisanal excellence.
Please note that there are differences in the height of the backrests, as well as in the spacing between the horizontal slats of the back. Additionally, the fabric is in used condition with holes and wear marks. Reupholstery is possible before shipping by our experienced craftspeople in our own in-house restoration atelier. With high attention for the original, they make sure every piece retains its value and is ready for the many years to come. Stunning set of dining chairs by Jacob Kjær manufactured in 1937. The Danish designer Jacob Kjær created this particular model for the Paris World Fair in 1937. The strong, elegant form of the geometrical backrest with spindles, all executed in the finest Cuban mahogany is absolutely striking. Lightness is created through the slim proportions of the frame which is executed in mahogany. Together with the original cognac niger leather with admirable patina this set of dining chairs is visually striking. A nice decorative touch are the brass rivets on the side of each seating.
Jacob Kjaer (1896-1957) started working as a furniture designer in 1915. From 1918-20 he studied at the Institute of Arts and Crafts Museum in Berlin, then worked in Paris and returned to Copenhagen in 1926. Here, he opened his own workshop. His highly skilled craftsmanship and designs got honored with the Hand Work Medal in 1954.
These items are in good, used condition and show patina and signs of wear and use common for pieces this age. The mahogany type of this piece does not require an export license.
