About the Item

Original "Orchestra" stacking chairs by renowned Swedish architect and designer Sven Markelius, dating from the Mid-Century period. Crafted with elegant birch frames and featuring their original side-ribbed corduroy seats with distinctive studded detail, these chairs embody classic Swedish Modern design. Markelius (1889–1972) was a pivotal figure in Swedish Functionalism and one of the country's most influential architects and designers of the 20th century. His "Orchestra" series, known for its minimalist elegance and practical design, was often seen in public spaces and concert halls, reflecting its name and purpose. These chairs exemplify his commitment to functional yet aesthetically pleasing forms. Designed for both comfort and efficiency, these chairs are notably stacking, making them ideal for adaptable spaces. They remain in a very original, 'as-found' condition, proudly displaying visible wear and patina consistent with their age and use. This includes scratching and possible minor chipping to the birch, as well as wear, fraying, and staining to the original corduroy fabric, all of which contribute to their authentic vintage character. Versatile and iconic, these chairs are perfect for dining, a home office, or as accent pieces in any space appreciating authentic Scandinavian Mid-Century design. Offered individually, they provide an opportunity to acquire a singular piece or build a custom set.
