About the Item

René Herbst was known as l’homme d’acier (man of steel) was of of the first French designers to work with tubular steerl earning him the nickname. The No. 212 chair is one of his simplest of his furniture designs consisting of two tubes that form the front legs, seat, and back rest, and are connected by two crossbars. The seat and backrest have been constructed from bungee cords, called sandows in French, after the founding father of modern bodybuilding, Eugen Sandow. The original No. 212 chairs were only produced in small numbers as exclusive individual pieces for specific interiors. These editions were most like produced in the 1980s via Ecart International. These chairs are part of the permanent collection MoMA in New York City.
