Set of 6 Antique French Empire Revival Mahogany Dining Chairs represent a tailored expression of the style, featuring gracefully curved legs designed for visual appeal as well as adding stability to the design. Seat backs are straightforward but deceptively comfortable, with a rounded top cross piece, and a single horizontal splat pierce-carved to resemble two lyre forms, centered with a bronze medallion rosette. Seats are a good height, and upholstered recently in a fine damascene fabric in a beautiful subdued gold and complementary beige tone that will prove very adaptable. The richness of the exotic imported wood cannot be denied, as well! Circa 1890s Each measures 34.5H x 18W x 17.5D; seat 19H Available for pickup in Baton Rouge, LA.

A set of six period Directoire dining chairs carved in Honduras mahogany. Identical chairs are shown in the reference book "Ebenists of the 18th century". While unstamped, this set comes with written documentation and attribution to George Jacob by a leading antique dealer in Paris from where they were purchased. Georges Jacob (6 July 1739 – 5 July 1814) the most prominent furniture maker in 18th century Paris. He produced carved, painted and gilded beds and seat furniture and upholstery work for the French royal châteaux, in the Neoclassical style that is associated with Louis XVI furniture. In his workshop he employed numerous specialist carvers and gilders. In 1785, Jacob produced the first mahogany chairs à l'anglaise, for the Comte de Provence similar in many ways to the ones on offer here. When he retired in 1796, Georges Jacob left his workshop in the hands of his two sons, one of whom was François-Honoré-Georges Jacob-Desmalter who went on to become a leading French Empire Furniture...
